Images and interactive tools for comparative primate anatomy.

Ford Collection
The University of Michigan's Museum of Anthropologay presents 163 skulls from a 19th century collection in high resolution photographs and with extensive descriptions. All specimen display pathological modifications or anatomic variants, with a focus on traumatic lesions.

PRIMO
Open-access data base of primate morphometry.

MorphoBank
Open-access morphological data base for phylogenetic research.

Turkana Data Base
Open-access data base containing thousands of records on fossilised vertebrate remains from the Turkana basin.

 Tools

Osteoware
Osteoware is a database front end for collecting osteological data from human skeletal remains. The package is based on an SQL data base and contains a number of forms for data entry that are integrated in a graphical user interface. For full functionality, you will also have to install the shareware 'Advantage Data Architect'. Data created in Osteoware can be read into other SQL data bases with the help of ODBC drivers for further analysis. Currently, the only supported platform is Microsoft Windows. Osteoware is developed at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington) and based on the "Standards for Data Collection from Human Skeletal Remains" by Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994).

Basel University Musuem of Anatomy
A collection of anatomical specimens from various times. The exhibition serves high didactical standards and makes a good companion in learning human anatomy. There are also special exhibitions.

Museum of Natural History Basel
The permanent exhibition "Mammoth and Saber-toothed Tiger" covers human evolution and the contemporary fauna and flora.

Anatomical Collection Heidelberg
The medical faculty at Heidelberg University played a central role in the development of the preparation technieque of plastination. Consequently, one part of the exhibition shows early platination specimens from the 80s. There are also other kinds of speicmens and displays on functional anatomy.

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
There is a permanent exhibition on human evolution on the ground floor. It might be currently redone, so it may be advisable to check with the museum for accessibility beforehand.

Distant Parts of the World

Neanderthal Museum Mettmann
Ritght in the Neander Valley, the site were the famous early human specimen was discovered, there is a modern museum with an elaborate exhibition. However, original objects are not on display.

Hunterian Museum London
The Royal College of Surgeons presents John Hunter's 19th century collection. In addition to anatomical displays, there is also a large variety of pathological alterations in skeletons. Through the online catalogue 'SurgiCat', images of most of the collection can be accessed.

Smithonian National Museum of Natural History
The Washington Museum has a huge permanent exhibition on human evolution. But there is also a large variety of contents to be accessed online.

Mütter Museum Philadelphia
A large 19th century medical collection with anatomical and pathological specimens. There is also an outstanding collection of objects that people have choked on.

Society for Anthropology
The Society for Anthropology (Gesellschaft für Anthropologie - GfA) represents anthropologists from research institutions in the German speaking countries. On their website they maintain a list of university departments in this region that conduct research in physical anthropology.

American Association of Physical Anthropologists
The AAPA ist the world's largest society of physical anthropologists.

Paleopathology Association
The PPA is a small but very active society. Their annual meetings are held alongside the AAPA meetings but there are also European meetings every second year.
