Walter-Hitzig Awards Type II

Type II fellowships of the Walter-Hitzig programme provide funding for for medical trainees to carry out protected periods of research in immunodeficiency in cooperation with a mentor and the hosting clinical institution. This programme is primarily directed at physicians who have not yet completed their subspecialty training. Applicants can be from any field eg, gastroenterology, haematology or pulmonology but have to have a clear focus on and undertake a research project in immunodeficiency or a related field in one of the CCI or associated labs. The aim of this programme is to provide a career pathway for excellent clinical scientists working in immunodeficiency and related fields.
The Type II Walter-Hitzig Award provides funds for a salary for up to 24 months and a limited budget for consumables. After the fellowship ends, it may be possible to continue residency training at the University Hospital Freiburg. Walter-Hitzig Awardees receive a certificate from the CCI at the end of their fellowship.
Physicians interested in applying for a type II fellowship should select a CCI group or associate group and plan a project with the group leader that would fit into this group. A short project outline of maximum 1500 words should be submited with the application. Short-listed applicants are invited for interview and successful candidates are requested to submit an extended proposal of 15 pages, jointly planning the project with the CCI host group.
Under certain circumstances it is possible to work towards a PhD with a type II fellowship.
The requirements for acceptance for type II fellowships of the Walter-Hitzig programme are
• an outstanding MD thesis, ideally with a first or second author publication
• a documented interest in the field of immunodeficiency
An incubator technician based in the CCI diagnostics unit can be assigned to support incubator scientists setting up their independent research project and is subject to availability. This assistance must be specifically applied for in the application.
Walter-Hitzig physicians are CCI fellows and as such participate in the CCI curriculum and are expected to attend the weekly CCI conferences and seminars.
