Freiburg in the Tri-Border Region (France-Switzerland-Germany)
The city of Freiburg has more than 210,000 inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The city is also the most southern, large city in Germany and serves as the seat of the Regional Council.
Other large cities situated in the area are Mulhouse (approximately 40 km to the west, in the French region of Alsace), Basel (approximately 60 km to the south and west in Switzerland), Zurich (approximately 120 km to the south and east in Switzerland), Strasbourg (approximately 85 km to the west in the French region of Alsace), Karlsruhe (approximately 140 km to the north), as well as Stuttgart (approximately 200 km to the north and east).
Approximately 15 % of the population of Freiburg are students at the Albert Ludwig University in the College of Education and College of Music.
The biggest employer in the city are the University and the University Medical Center, followed by the state government and municipal services.
Tourism also plays a decisive role in Freiburg. Because the city is located between the upper Rhine Valley and the Black Forest and it is called the gate to the Black Forest. The region's mild climate, famous mountains and valleys of the Black Forest (Schauinsland, Belchen, Feldberg, Höllental and Glottertal) together with the history of the city, the small rivulets running throughout the city (Freiburger Bächle) and the famous Freiburg Cathedral, make Freiburg one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.
Due to its close location to the Swiss and French borders, Freiburg is an ideal starting point for sightseeing excursions and day trips to Switzerland and the Alsace in France.
