Lions Club International, District 111 - Süd-West, Distrikthilfswerk (Lions District Relief Organisation)
The Lions Club represents the largest worldwide service organisation with over 1.4 million members in more than 120 countries. Following the principle ‘we serve’, the organisation strives to pursue humanitarian objectives.
One aim is to support adolescents by fostering their natural talents, while opposing delinquent activities and providing support to those in need.
The motto ‘sight first’ has been associated with the Lions organisation for many decades. The Lions Club endeavors to help the blind and the visually handicapped, who are identified by the white cane, an aid which originated from the Lions.
Within the 15 districts of Germany, there are more than 40,000 active Lions members who annually donate between 20 to 25 Million Euro to social projects. In addition, there are also numerous volunteering activities by members, such as helping the elderly, children and ill individuals. The Lions Club is complemented by its youth organisation, the LEOs, that pursue independent projects.
The Süd West (South West) district which encompasses the administrative regions Karlsruhe and Freiburg, disposes of 79 clubs and approximately 2,600 members who are committed to pursuing the Lions' objectives on a regional and national level. There is a Lions' charitable district relief organisation which is engaged in furthering regional projects, such as the Cornea Bank of the Ophthalmology Department of the University Medical Center Freiburg which is under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas Rheinhard.
In the vicinity of Freiburg, from Emmendingen to Waldshut, there are 12 active clubs which are involved in various projects.
