Hereditary Kidney- and Hypertension Diseases
We have a special outpatient clinic with an associated research office where patients can come for personal consultation any time.
Moleculargenetic analyses are done in our research laboratory for free. All we need is 10-20 ml EDTA-blood.

Objectives
1. All activities are meant to improve the medical care of the patientes and their families. The most important for us is to support the patients in our outpatient clinic and to work out treatment guidelines which, if applicable, shall be put into practice.
2. The examinations are part of a complex system. this includes: moleculargenetic diagnostic, i.e. the etiological basics, effects on kidney and blood pressure, effects on other organs, risks of the natural course of the disease, results of clinical diagnostic procedures, treatment options and their outcome.
3. Most of these diseases can be considered as rare. The development of a registry as large and detailed as possible include all of theses aspects. Theseregistries are the basis for individual consultations as well as research projects.
4. Data of each patient are collected systematically in anonymized fashion with standardized questionaires in our research office.
5. A moleculargenetic analysis is done on blood or tissue samples in our research laboratory to find out if there is a genetical disposition for the particular disease. DNA is exctracted from the blood sample and one (or several') gene(s) of interest is/are analyzed. The exact position and the type of the mutation is determined to confirm the diagnosis on a moleculargenetic basis.
6. If needed, further investigations are done in addition to all known results. These investigations are carried out by specialists
- internal, eye, ENT, neurological, urological investigations
- magnetic resonance tomography of the head, of the spinal cord or of the abdomen
- nuclear medicine investigations
- special laboratory investigations
7. Based on the results of all investigations we recommend a screening or follow-up program. with permanently updated programs an effective preventive medicien can be realized. Many patients want their follow-up investigations to be done in Freiburg. The outpatient clinic, the research office and specialists from different departments are available for these patients at the University Hospital in Freiburg.
