Medical and Scientific Scopes

The focus of the diagnostic activities at the Department of Neuropathology is the evaluation of bioptic tissue specimens from the central and peripheral nervous system, covering the microscopic and molecular examination of CNS and PNS tissues. Research activities comprise projects in the area of innate immunity of the brain, such as autoimmune inflammation (EAE model), neurodegeneration and general immunity (see research activities). Clinical and scientific work is being carried out in close collaboration with collegues from the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and other medical specialties within the Neurocenter and from other institutions.

Diagnostic Procedures

Diagnostic Neuropathology comprises the entire spectrum of histopathological, ultrastructural, and molecular evaluation of tissues from the central and peripheral nervous system, including sceletal muscle. Methods commonly used and available in the Department of Neuropathology include:

  • Histopathological Examination
  • Additional Staining Methods and Tissue Processing including Immunohistochemistry
  • Electron Microscopy
  • Molecular Analyses
