Virology for Foreign Medical Students (SOKRATES-ECTS Program)

Contents:
Principles of general virology, epidemiology, viral pathogenesis and host defense mechanisms. Present practice and future trends in antiviral chemotherapy and vaccination. Biology and disease manifestations of clinically important viruses such as Herpesviruses, Hepatitisviruses, Enteroviruses, Respiratory viruses, Parvoviruses, Tumor viruses, Hemorrhagic fever viruses, Retroviruses including HIV, Prions. Laboratory diagnosis of virus infections. Practical exercise in small groups (6 students and one tutor): each student tests his/her own serum for antibodies to Rubella virus, Hepatitis B virus and Epstein-Barr-virus using a number of standard assays. A seminar is devoted to clinical cases and problem solving. Workshops allow in-depth studies on special topics (for example: congenital and perinatal infections, innate immunity and interferons, viral oncolysis, new vaccines, problems with Hepatitis C virus).
