German Cancer Consortium - Deutsches Konsortium Translationale Krebsforschung

The enormous growth in knowledge in cancer research presents physicians and scientists with the challenge of ensuring that patients benefit from the latest insights and developments as quickly as possible. Within the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), cancer researchers and medical practitioners collaborate closely at eight locations across Germany. The aim is to speed up the transfer to clinical practice of new diagnostic and treatment approaches. Translating innovations quickly from basic research into clinical practice is the core task of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK). DKTK is a joint initiative involving the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), participating German states, German Cancer Aid and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). It was established in October 2012 as one of six German Health Research Centres (DZGs). The German Cancer Research Center, as the core centre, works together with research institutions and clinics in Berlin, Dresden, Essen/Düsseldorf, Frankfurt/Mainz, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Munich and Tübingen to create the best possible conditions for clinically oriented cancer Research. Scientists from different disciplines have been working together within the DKTK at more than 20 institutions and university hospitals, linking cutting-edge basic and clinical Research. The result is a unique network of some of the strongest cancer research and cancer therapy centers in the country. These partner institutions are united by their main goal of developing customized approaches for better patient care – all the way from basic research to clinical implementation in one combined effort. Research areas include: cancer initiation and progression, improved, earlier detection, and development of therapies that more precisely target tumors. This will play a crucial role in improving patients’ chances of recovery. Additionally, new strategies will help to better define the risks of developing cancer and will aid in finding new strategies for reducing the cancer incidence in the future.

The participating scientists and institutions have chosen translational research programs and platforms, outlined initial examples for projects and trials to be carried out and introduced a model for joint translation centers and an organizational framework for DKTK. Detailed research plans for the translational programs and platforms were defined by task forces representing experts from all participating centers.
