Information and contact details for international nursing staff

The Medical Center – University of Freiburg is one of the largest clinics of its kind in Germany, with a staff of around 12,500 employees.

In keeping with our motto of extending frontiers in medicine, we have been recruiting employees from abroad for over 30 years.

Your application

We would be delighted to receive your application. After an initial review of the documents you send us, we will contact you, either via Skype or over the phone, to determine which area of care would be the best fit for you based on your experience and preferences.

Together, we will then determine how to proceed and what else might be necessary in order for your qualifications to be recognised in Germany.

The following step involves work shadowing, where you will have several days to gain an impression of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, the team and the ward where you wish to work, as well as the city of Freiburg and its surroundings.

Finally, we will talk about your impressions, as well as any questions you may have, and discuss next steps.

Support in adjusting to everyday life (in Germany)

The Medical Center – University of Freiburg currently employs people from 150 different countries. All of us here would like to help you get settled in Germany by offering support, advice, insider tips and whatever else we can.

We hold regular peer group meetings for international employees, which provide a space for confidential discussions, for example of cultural issues that may have come up in day-to-day work. The participants determine the topics and format of these discussions, which are also an ideal forum for making new contacts at work.

A practical supervisor will accompany you throughout the orientation phase. You will also have access to free German tutoring to continually consolidate and expand on your language skills. Thanks to our in-house German teacher, we are able to train and test up to level B2 of German (CEFR) here at the University Medical Center. Twice yearly, we host specialised courses on care-related topics for international employees.

Additionally, you will always have the opportunity to connect with your designated contact person to discuss relevant topics in person and in a safe environment whenever necessary.

Procedure for recognising foreign qualifications in Baden-Württemberg

We offer both theoretical and practical training in keeping with the German Nursing Act (Krankenpflegegesetz). The aim is to test your knowledge and/or offer an adaptation period so that you will eventually be authorised to bear the professional title of nurse (Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger*in or Pflegefachfrau*Pflegefachmann), paediatric nurse (Gesundheits- und Kinderkrankenpfleger*in or Pflegefachfrau*Pflegefachmann mit Vertiefung in der pädiatrischen Versorgung), midwife (Hebamme or Entbindungspfleger), etc. as recognised by German law.

The first step involves preparing all the relevant documentation, so that you can travel to Germany from your native country or change places of work within Germany without encountering problems. We actively support you in this process, for instance when dealing with official matters, searching for a home and getting oriented here in Freiburg.

We offer free, independent counselling upon initial contact, whether in a personal meeting, over the phone or via Skype. This allows us to discuss your current situation and what opportunities are open to you.

We work in cooperation with regional advising centres and would be happy to put you in direct contact if you would like additional independent counselling.
