Exceptional situation in the blood: prevention and treatment of sepsis
On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, the University Medical Center Freiburg and the Sepsis Foundation invite you to a joint information lecture on the topic of sepsis. The lecture is aimed at all interested parties, patients and relatives.
Sepsis, also known colloquially as blood poisoning, is the most serious complication of an infection. Around 320,000 cases of sepsis occur in Germany every year. With 77,000 deaths, sepsis is the third most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Prof. Dr. Alexander Hötzel, Managing Senior Physician at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Freiburg University Hospital, and Prof. Dr. Thorsten Brenner, MHBA, Senior Consultant at the Department of Anaesthesiology at Heidelberg University Hospital, will be providing information on

from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm
in lecture hall 3118 (1st floor),
College Building III
of the University of Freiburg,
Platz der Universität 3 in Freiburg,
on ways to prevent and treat sepsis.
The best protection against sepsis is to avoid infections. "Few people know that you can also protect yourself against sepsis through vaccinations, for example against seasonal flu or the pathogen that causes pneumonia," explains Hötzel.
The occurrence and course of the disease are determined, among other things, by the patient's immune system and the aggressiveness of the causative pathogen. Chronically ill patients, premature babies, newborns and the elderly are more susceptible to infections and sepsis. Up to 80 percent of sepsis cases develop outside the hospital in outpatient settings.
Sepsis must be treated as an emergency. The earlier treatment is started, the higher the chances of survival. Every hour counts. Treatment must begin in the emergency room at the latest and often requires treatment in an intensive care unit.
