PD Dr. med. Fabian Kari
Surgeon - CardiothoracicResearch Interests:
- Modes and mechanisms of failure of cardiac valvular and thoracic vascular repair
- Ventriculo-arterial coupling in congenital cardiac lesions and aneurysmatic disease in the setting of hereditary connective tissue disorders
- Functional results after valve-sparing aortic root replacement and aortic valve repair
Brief CV:
Fabian Alexander Kari studied Medicine in Freiburg (2003-2010). For his doctoral thesis on neuroprotection during thoracic aortic repair (“summa cum laude”) he spent one year as research fellow at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (2007, cardiothoracic surgery large animal laboratory, Randall B. Griepp) in New York. After graduation from medical school (Approbation) in 2010 he accomplished a one-year postdoctoral clinical research fellowship at Stanford University focusing on functional results after valve-sparing aortic root surgery in the setting of hereditary connective tissue disease and congenital aortic valve disease (D. Craig Miller). From 2011 to 2018 he trained at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in Freiburg and accomplished board certification “Cardiac Surgery” (Facharzt) in 2018. Fabian Alexander Kari is fully ECMG-certified. In 2018 he returned to New York and trained as clinical fellow at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Columbia University, to subspecialize in pediatric cardiac surgery (Emile Bacha). Since 2019 he serves as cardiac surgeon at the University Heart Center Freiburg. He is past and present PI of different projects funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the German Heart Foundation (DSHF). Fabian Alexander Kari received the “venia legendi” (Habilitation) in cardiac surgery in 2019.
