Institute for Cell and Gene Therapy (IZG)

The Institute for Cell and Gene Therapy Freiburg (IZG) provides the University Medical Center with blood products and all transfusion and transplantation related diagnostic services. The institute's research efforts focus on the development and evaluation of safe platforms for the manufacturing of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) using gene editing technologies.

In recent years, a number of institutions with a focus on cell and gene therapy have been established in Germany. The Institute for Cell and Gene Therapy was founded in 2013 by merging the Department of Transfusion Medicine with newly established research units at the Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency (CCI) and a GMP clean room facility. In consequence, the IZG combines an established facility for patient care and specialized personnel for GMP-compliant manufacturing processes with research groups focusing on establishing new perspectives in cell and gene therapy for patients suffering from rare immunodeficiencies, HIV infection and leukemia.
