Hauptziele der Forschung

Zentrales Forschungsthema der Sektion Experimentelle Neuropsychiatrie sind die neurologischen und neurobiologischen Grundlagen geistiger Leistungen und psychischer Störungen. Psychische Leistungen sind die höchsten und komplexesten kognitiven, emotionalen, motivationalen und Verhaltensleistungen die Menschen hervorbringen können. Die Leistungen sind Ergebnisse von Lern- und Prägeerfahrungen der Individuen vor dem Hintergrund der ihnen jeweils zur Verfügung stehenden organischen Ressourcen. Letztere sind bedingt nicht nur durch die angeborene Genetik sondern auch durch die Lerngeschichte, die im Prozess der Ontogenese die Neurobiologie sowohl auf genetischer als auch auf organischer Ebene beeinflussen kann (frontobasale Schleifensysteme).

Dabei soll in theoretischen Arbeiten versucht werden die Frage zu lösen, wie sich Bedeutungsphänomene (Semantik) in neuronalen Netzwerken etablieren können (BioLogik).

In den empirischen Forschungsarbeiten kommen alle Methoden der strukturellen Bildgebung, der neurochemischen Bildgebung und der funktionellen Bildgebung zum Einsatz. Es laufen zahlreiche Studien zu allen großen neuropsychiatrischen Erkrankungsbildern. Dabei konnte in den letzten Jahren mit der Etablierung des Süddeutschen Brain Imaging Centers (SBIC) sowie der Forschergruppe Freiburg Brain Imaging (FBI), eines der größten Netzwerke der klinisch-neurowissenschaftlichen und zugleich bildgebenden Forschung in Deutschland aufgebaut werden.

Die Sektion arbeitet mit zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Kooperationspartnern zusammen (s.u.).
