(x) Certificate of professional qualification (certified document and translation)

(x) German language certificate B2 (minimum B1) from telc, Goethe-Insititut, ÖSD or similar (certified document)
(x) Deficiency decision from Stuttgart Regional Council (if it has already been issued)

You are invited to send your application documents using this link. We will contact you by e-mail as soon as we have reviewed your application.

Depending on your qualification, professional experience, language skills and the type of vacancy, we will proceed with the next step, which will be a video call. This will allow us to discuss with you which area of care would be the best fit for you based on your experience and preferences.

We will also be happy to discuss the status of your professional qualification in Germany.

We would be happy to give you the opportunity for a clinical visit. This will give you an idea of Medical Center – University of Freiburg / Bad Krozingen location, the area of care and the team working on the ward.

At the end of the clinical visit, we will talk about your impressions, as well as any questions you may have, and discuss next steps.

Not a problem – we will discuss with you how to proceed. In these cases, a second interview with the head of nursing/head of ward in question often makes sense. This helps both sides to discuss specific and technical questions.

Note: Please inform yourself about working and living in Germany and whether your professional qualification is recognised. Please go to Useful links and information to find out more.

Having your professional qualification recognised is a precondition for working in your profession in Germany. To do this, you must file an application for the recognition of foreign qualifications. For the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, the application must be sent to Stuttgart Regional Council.

Note: To find which documents are needed and who to contact about applying for recognition of foreign qualifications see: Regierungspräsidium Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart

Our mutual goal will be to obtain recognition for one of the following German professional titles

  • Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger*in (nurse)
  • Gesundheits- und Kinderkrankenpfleger*in (paediatric nurse)
  • Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann (nurse)
  • Midwife/obstetric nurse
  • ATA/OTA (anaesthetic/surgical nurse)

under German law, which you will have to prove through a qualification measure.

When applying for recognition, you may choose between an adaptation period or an examination as a qualification measure.

As a maximum care hospital, the Medical Center – University of Freiburg offers the following qualification measures:

  • Examination for the recognition as nurse or paediatric nurse
  • Adaptation period with oral examination for the recognition as midwife/obstetric nurse

For the recognition as anaesthetic/surgical nurse, our requirements are a little different: In addition to the above-mentioned application documents, the deficiency decision from the Stuttgart Regional Council must also be submitted. The qualification measures for anaesthetic/surgical nurses will be adapted in line with the deficiency found (sometimes on a case-by-case basis) in collaboration with our Academy for Medical Vocations. Applicants must have a German language certificate B2 at the time of the application and several years of professional experience in the field of anaesthetic/surgical nursing is a prerequisite for participating in a qualification measure for professional recognition at our Medical Center. If you have any questions, we will be happy to advise you.

Note: Are you already working at Medical Center – University of Freiburg but have not yet obtained recognition for your foreign professional qualification? Please get in touch (see contacts)

We have decided to offer you employment and you have accepted? Here are the next steps:

First, you have to prepare all the relevant documentation, so that you can travel to Germany from your native country or change places of work within Germany without encountering problems. We will be happy to support and advise you, providing the information you need.

The Medical Center – University of Freiburg currently employs people from 150 different countries. All of us here would like to help you get settled in Germany by offering support, advice, insider tips and whatever else we can.

Twice a year, we organise integration events or meetings for our international nursing staff. At these events, you won’t just learn about Freiburg and its surroundings, but will also meet new co-workers who are going down a similar path to you, or have already done so. This will give you the opportunity to discuss various topics, ask questions and learn about the way things are done in Germany (at work and outside of it). The participants determine the topics and format of these discussions.

You will also have access to free German tutoring to continually consolidate and expand on your language skills. Thanks to our in-house German teacher and language examiner for levels B2 to C2, we are able to prepare you for the standardised language exam here at the University Medical Center outside of working hours.

Furthermore, all international staff have the opportunity to obtain advice about the language development opportunities. We also offer practical solutions to understand language gaps and find a solution.

Once you have received your professional qualification certificate, you will be able to improve your language skills by attending a C1 language course. For further information on free German classes, see here.
