Mental support for cancer

Psycho-oncology

(22.07.2025 ) Cancer not only saps your strength physically, but often psychologically too. Psycho-oncologists help people to cope with the stress.

After being diagnosed with cancer, nothing is as it was. Suddenly many questions arise: How do I tell my partner or children? Is it still worth making plans? Will I be able to work again? In this new situation, many patients feel overwhelmed and helpless. "One in three cancer patients is so emotionally burdened that it makes sense to consult a specialist trained in psycho-oncology," emphasizes Cornelia Schulz. The psychologist heads the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center of the Tumor Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Freiburg University Medical Center.

An active coping strategy helps

Cancer patients can find support for their emotional needs during outpatient therapy or aftercare - even if they are not being treated at the Freiburg University Medical Center. "From our experience, we know that most patients benefit from an active coping strategy," says Schulz. This includes obtaining comprehensive information and dealing openly with feelings. That's why the staff at the psychosocial cancer counseling center offer individual counseling and various group offers, such as a mindfulness group or a "Men in Motion" hiking group - or refer patients to other offers, such as nutrition or sports for cancer.

Supporting offers also during oncological rehab

Patients are also supported during rehabilitation at the Clinic for Oncological Rehabilitation at the Freiburg University Medical Center with comprehensive individual and group psycho-oncological services as well as art therapy services such as dance and painting therapy. Head psychologist Markus Birmele explains: "We help our patients to regain self-confidence and self-esteem, gain confidence in their bodies and improve their mental performance. Because this also improves their quality of life."
