Data security
Laboratory values, CT and MRI scans, detailed diagnoses - sensitive patient data is generated every day at the university hospital. This data must be protected from unauthorized access, but must be available around the clock for ongoing treatments. At the University Medical Center Freiburg, all relevant information is stored in parallel in two separate data centers. This means that even if one server location fails completely, patients are provided with a secure supply. The data centers are monitored around the clock and additionally secured by alarm systems. In the air-conditioned interior rooms, fire and water detectors register any anomalies and immediately raise the alarm with the fire department. The power supply runs via two different transformer stations, and diesel generators are available for emergency power supply in the event of a power failure.
We also place high demands on the employees who handle patient data. All employees are made aware of the need to handle data, information and communication technology responsibly from their first day at work.
Antivirus and malware protection programs protect around 14,000 computers from intruders, while firewalls seal off the hospital network both internally and externally. Individually assigned authorizations for drives and programs, automatic desktop locks, password-protected log-ins and TAN procedures protect against unauthorized access.
