Ernst Thomann

* May 6, 1910 in Emmendingen, † February 1, 2009 in Emmendingen; German sculptor

Impressed by his drawing teacher Kiby, Ernst Thomann began studying at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin in 1933 under Alfred Vocke and as a master student of Ludwig Gies. When Gies was dismissed as a "degenerate artist" in 1939, Thomann left the university along with other students. Interrupted by the Second World War and his subsequent captivity as a prisoner of war in France, he worked on commissions and free works, especially reliefs. In 1964, Thomann learned to weld and since then has almost exclusively produced abstract stainless steel sculptures. The artist had his studio in Emmendingen, which awarded him the town's culture prize in 1986. The collaboration with his wife Margret Thomann-Hegner inspired Thomann's work until his death.
