Lions Club International, District 111 - Southwest, District Service Organization
Lions is the world's largest service organization, with over 1.4 million members in more than 120 countries around the world. A number of ethical goals are pursued under the motto "we serve".
A key concern is young people, crime prevention and the promotion of talented individuals, as well as support for the needy and people in distress.
The "sight first" theme has accompanied the Lions movement for many decades. It is the help for the blind and visually impaired, which is most obvious to the outsider through the white blind man's stick, a help originally created by Lions.
In Germany, more than 40,000 Lions are active in 15 districts and are involved in social aid projects to the tune of 20 to 25 million euros every year. In addition, there are many activities without the use of funds, e.g. in the care of the elderly, children and the sick. The Lions are complemented by their youth organization, the LEOs, which pursue independent projects.
The South West District, covering the administrative districts of Karlsruhe and Freiburg, with 79 clubs and around 2,600 members, is committed to the aims of Lions both regionally and nationally. It maintains its own district relief organization with recognized charitable status, which is managed and supervised on a voluntary basis. This aid organization supports supra-regional projects of the district such as the eye bank at the eye clinic of the University of Freiburg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard.
There are 12 active clubs in the Freiburg area, from Emmendingen to Waldshut, which are involved in many different projects.
