Intensive Care Trainee Program at the University Medical Center Freiburg

"The trainee program was made for me,"

says Carina Schmid, a nurse at the Freiburg University Medical Center. After completing her training, she worked on a normal ward for four years, but she always wanted to do further training in intensive care. The intensive care trainee program at the University Medical Center Freiburg offered the perfect opportunity: a planned and supervised introduction to working in an intensive care unit. "I always have a contact person on the ward and can ask questions of my experienced colleagues," says Schmid.

As a trainee, the nursing specialist receives special support when starting out: "I receive specific training and then look after my own group of patients," explains Schmid. Together with the other trainees, Schmid learns theoretical background knowledge in addition to her practical work. They also went to a nursing congress in Berlin together. "It was exciting to exchange ideas with other nurses," says Schmid. After her first intensive care unit in neurosurgery, there are still assignments on two other intensive care units at the university hospital. After that, Schmid would like to decide on a permanent ward.
