Franz Gutmann

*14.8.1928 Obermünstertal (Black Forest) - died 3.10.2024 Staufen

Franz Gutmann studied theology for two semesters at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg before beginning his studies at the Kunstakademie Freiburg under Wilhelm Gerstel in 1951, following an internship with the sculptor Franz Spiegelhalter. After three semesters, he transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he became friends with Joseph Beuys and Erwin Heerich and a master student of Ewald Mataré. From 1956 to 1957, the artist traveled through Central Africa thanks to a travel grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1980, he was awarded the Art Prize of the Economy for Fine Arts on the Upper Rhine, and in 2002 he was awarded the title of professor. Numerous solo exhibitions show the sculptural diversity of Franz Gutmann, who lived and worked on the Stohren in Obermünstertal.
