* July 16, 1918 in Freiburg im Breisgau; † March 1977; German sculptor
Bruno Knittel came from a well-known family of sculptors in Freiburg. His father Hugo Knittel was also a sculptor, as was his father Gustav Adolf Knittel and his grandfather Josef Alois Knittel. Bruno's older brother Wolfgang became a painter and graphic artist. Bruno Knittel first learned from his father. During the Second World War, he was taken prisoner of war, from which he returned in 1946. He settled in Freiburg in 1950 as a freelance sculptor. In contrast to his ancestors, Bruno Knittel worked abstractly to the point of complete abstraction. He died in March 1977. His son Markus (* October 10, 1965) learned his father's craft from Michael Storr in Freiburg, then attended master school and opened a studio in Opfingen in 1998.
