Herbert Maier
On Sunday, May 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. , an exhibition by Herbert Maier will open at the University Heart Center Freiburg ∙ Bad Krozingen (Südring 15, Bad Krozingen, attic floor). Under the title "Formed Time", selected oil paintings from various series of works by the Freiburg artist are on display.
The word "Speicher" (memory) is the title of all of Herbert Maier's paintings, which he understands as a condensed, stored view. What is seen is not depicted directly, but as an extract from various visual experiences. These are inscribed in the painting over a longer period of time in transparent and semi-transparent layers of oil paint and open up to the viewer over the course of the "viewing time". Through the many glazes of color, the paintings are layered up to the point of material corporeality and at the same time remain transparent and immaterial. This apparent contradiction is combined in Maier's works in the greatest possible arc of tension.
Herbert Maier began his artistic work as a self-taught artist. In 1983, he received a Rotary scholarship for studies in Paris and taught at private art institutions in Freiburg from 1986 to 1988. Since 1994, he has held a teaching position for etching at the University of Education in Freiburg. In the course of his artistic career, Herbert Maier has received scholarships from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation (Bethany/USA), the Edward F. Albee Foundation (Montauk/USA), the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation, the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris and the Künstlerhaus Lukas Ahrenshoop, among others. Since 1977, the artist has traveled to a wide variety of countries, including Spain, Bulgaria, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Israel, Mexico, Guatemala, Iran, the USA, the Ivory Coast and the Balkans. Herbert Maier is a member of the Munich Neue Gruppe. He lives and works in Freiburg im Breisgau.
The exhibition can be viewed from Monday, May 13, 2019 to Friday, July 5, 2019 on weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm at the University Heart Center, Bad Krozingen site (attic floor).
