Sustainable in three dimensions

The University Medical Center Freiburg should act economically, ecologically and socially. In 2019, it made a clear commitment to economic, ecological and social responsibility by signing the Klimawin BW (formerly WIN Charter).

Promoting sustainable thinking and action is the aim of the charter of the Baden-Württemberg Sustainability Initiative (WIN). In twelve guiding principles, the Klimawin Charter describes the participating institutions' understanding of sustainability, which includes topics such as human rights, social and environmental concerns, sustainable and fair finances and the fight against corruption as well as regional added value.

From these twelve guiding principles, the University Hospital selects two to three focal points each year, which are dealt with in particular detail in the sustainability report. In 2024, one focus was on climate protection with the aim of actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The increased use of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency will reduce the hospital's ecological footprint and at the same time contribute to the global climate protection agenda. In addition, measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change are essential in order to increase the hospital's resilience - for example by protecting it from heat and other extreme weather events and safeguarding the health of patients and employees. Another focus is on reducing the consumption of natural resources and promoting a circular economy in order to establish sustainable processes, minimize waste and use resources more efficiently, which is both ecologically and economically beneficial in the long term.

However, the other guiding principles of Klimawin BW are also dealt with in detail, because: "It is important to regularly put our actions in all these areas to the test. This is the only way we can continue to develop consistently and make our contribution to a healthy future worth living," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Director and Chairman of the Executive Board of the University Hospital.
