The putti in the eastern half-courtyard of the Surgical University Clinic are probably Wolfgang Merten's last major public commission, probably commissioned as a joint work for him and Ludwig Kubanek.

"... The "lovable sculptures" show the expected role behavior shortly before the beginning of the Second World War: The girls, even if they are outward-looking, appear altogether more closed and passive than the boys, who appear exuberant, dynamic and aggressive. An ideal world against the backdrop of an ominous development."
