Adolf Kußmaul Prize for Freiburg physician
New Head of Interdisciplinary Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, Dr. Arthur Schmidt, is honored for his study on endoscopic full-wall resection
Dr. Arthur Schmidt, who took over as Head of Interdisciplinary Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (IGE) in the Department of Medicine II at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg (specializing in gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology and infectiology) at the beginning of May, has been awarded this year's prestigious Adolf Kußmaul Prize. The prize, worth 5,000 euros, was presented to him at the annual conference of the Southwest German Society of Gastroenterology in Ludwigsburg at the beginning of July 2017. He received the award for his study on endoscopic full-thickness resections in the lower part of the digestive tract, known as the gastrointestinal tract. In full-wall resection, for example, tumors are removed from the wall of the large intestine using a minimally invasive endoscope. The study will be published in the gastroenterology journal GUT. The prize, which has been awarded annually since 1991 on the occasion of the conference of the Southwest German Society for Gastroenterology, is named after the gastroenterologist Adolf Kußmaul (1822-1902). It is awarded specifically to young scientists.
"With Dr. Schmidt, we have been able to attract an excellent interventional endoscopist to Freiburg, who will expand the range of methods in our endoscopy with new procedures and promote the academization of endoscopy," said Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme, Medical Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Medicine II. His focus is on the establishment and clinical investigation of new endoscopic procedures, such as the full-wall resection of benign skin tumors in the intestine, so-called adenomas and polyps. Another focus is on the application of new procedures for hemostasis, such as OTSC clips. These closures are inserted into the tissue after an endoscopic full-wall resection in order to stop the bleeding after the procedure. "I'm looking forward to my role in Freiburg in a state-of-the-art endoscopy department, where I can work with my colleagues to establish new endoscopic procedures," says Dr. Schmidt. His research work in the field of surgical endoscopy has already been awarded numerous prizes.
Most recently, Dr. Schmidt was Medical Director of Endoscopy at Ludwigsburg Hospital under Prof. Dr. Karel Caca, one of Germany's leading experts in interventional endoscopy. In addition to endoscopy, he also works extensively in the field of gastrointestinal oncology, in which he has been certified by the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases. He successfully completed his habilitation in Heidelberg this month.
