Freiburg psychiatrist new member of the Leopoldina


Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Katharina Domschke, M.A. (USA) has been elected as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina. Prof. Domschke is Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

Being elected a member of the Leopoldina is considered one of the highest honors and recognitions for scientists. "It is a special honor to become a member of the Leopoldina. I am very much looking forward to the discussions and professional exchange with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines," says Prof. Domschke. Due to her specialist background, she will be a member of the Neuroscience Section.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Katharina Domschke has been Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg since December 2016. Prof. Domschke studied medicine and psychology in Münster, Dublin and Boston. After completing her doctorate at the Universities of Münster and Maastricht, she habilitated at the University of Münster in 2008. In 2012, she took up a W2 professorship in psychiatry at the University Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy in Würzburg, where she was most recently Deputy Clinic Director. Since this year, she has also been Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of Vienna. Prof. Domschke has many years of clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of mental illnesses in adulthood. Her particular focus is on depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders and stress-related illnesses.

Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences

The Leopoldina is one of the oldest scientific academies in the world. Founded in 1652, it is committed to free science for the benefit of mankind and to shaping the future. With around 1,500 members, the Leopoldina brings together outstanding scientists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and numerous other countries.

As Germany's National Academy, the Leopoldina has represented German science in international bodies since 2008 and takes an independent position on the scientific basis of political and social issues. In interdisciplinary expert groups, the Leopoldina develops public statements on current topics, also together with other German, European and international academies.
