Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science starts in Freiburg

Cooperation between university hospital and university: academic midwifery training from fall 2021

Freiburg's midwifery education is being reorganized: The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery will start at the University of Freiburg in the winter semester 2021/22 in close cooperation with the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. A total of 35 first-year places will be created at the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg.

The Midwifery Reform Act stipulates that future midwives complete a dual academic degree with a high practical component at a university. "Midwifery training as a degree course makes the profession more attractive. By expanding the number of midwifery science study places, we are therefore making a decisive contribution to ensuring high-quality obstetrics throughout the country in the long term. The close link between research and teaching will lead to a significant increase in the quality of training and practice in the midwifery profession. The direct connection to the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will promote this interaction in a very special way," said Theresia Bauer, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg.

"Midwives are indispensable for providing the best possible health care for women before and during childbirth as well as in postnatal care. This is why we need scientifically sound training at the highest level. We are delighted to be able to offer the course this year," says Prof. Dr. Norbert Südkamp, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg.

Strengthening research for pregnant women

Until now, obstetrics has mostly been researched as a branch of medicine and was dominated by doctors. Now, midwife-specific issues can be discussed scientifically. "This gives midwives their own profile in research and allows them to focus more on the special interests of pregnant women and women giving birth," says Prof. Dr. Christiane Kugler, Director of the Institute of Nursing Science at the University of Freiburg, where the new degree program is based. "This is research for pregnant women instead of about pregnant women."

Practice based on good theoretical foundations

The practical part of the course continues to be of great importance and takes place at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg as well as in cooperating hospitals and with midwives working outside the clinic. In seven semesters of standard study time, students learn obstetrics at a scientific level and contribute to the positive and sustainable further development of the profession. "The course opens up new perspectives for the midwifery profession and reflects the increased demands in the care of pregnant women and newborns," says Helmut Schiffer, Nursing Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
