Sleep well at last

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is testing new therapies for sleep disorders / Study participants wanted

Around ten percent of people in Germany suffer from difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. These so-called insomnias often also impair the performance and well-being of those affected during the day. Sleep researchers at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are investigating the best way to treat sleep disorders in several studies, which - depending on the research question - take place during the day or in the sleep laboratory. "In our sleep laboratory studies, we want to gain a better understanding of how insomnia develops, while our treatment studies aim to improve existing psychotherapeutic treatment for all those affected," explains study leader Prof. Dr. Dieter Riemann, who heads the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychophysiology at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

Sleeping for science

Participants in the sleep laboratory study spend four nights in the sleep laboratory and undergo extensive sleep diagnostic examinations. Participation in this study is remunerated. "The test subjects help us to identify the causes and possible new treatments for sleep disorders. During the day, they can go about their daily lives as normal," says Riemann.

Rapid treatment at the highest level

In the daytime treatment studies, people with sleep disorders can benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, which is recommended in the current guidelines for the treatment of insomnia.

People aged 18 and over who have had difficulty falling asleep or sleeping through the night for at least three months can take part. They should not suffer from any other sleep disorders or be taking medication that affects sleep, should not be working night shifts and should not currently be undergoing psychotherapy. Whether participation in the study is possible will be discussed in advance by telephone. Interested parties can contact us by e-mail at schlafstudie@uniklinik-freiburg.de.
