Ceremonial renaming of the interdisciplinary facility to "Gerok Liver Center"

The Liver Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now called the Gerok Liver Center. On the occasion of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gerok 's 90th birthday, colleagues, friends and students gathered together with the namesake in the lecture hall of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Prof. Gerok was Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg from 1987 to the beginning of 1993. With his name and his person, he stands for the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and for hepatology in Freiburg. This is why he was chosen to name the Gerok Liver Center.

The Liver Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has been an interdisciplinary facility for many years, in which hepatologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists and surgeons work together. "Because many specialists from different disciplines work together in the Liver Center with the common goal of curing liver diseases, rapid and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of various liver diseases is guaranteed," explains Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme, Medical Director of the Department of Medicine II (focus: gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology and infectiology) at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "In Wolfgang Gerok, we have found a namesake for the Liver Center who not only set new standards in the field of hepatology with his scientific and clinical research, but also influenced entire generations of doctors with his friendly and modest personality, which always focused on the patient," continued Thimme.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gerok was also the initiator of various renowned research symposia and programs, such as the most important international meeting of liver researchers on the subject of bile acid, the "Bile Acid Meeting". This meeting has been held regularly every two years since 1970. The name Gerok is also firmly anchored in the German Research Foundation (DFG). The so-called "Gerok positions", named after the former Vice-President, provide DFG-funded personnel resources. These funds allow physicians to take a temporary leave of absence from their clinical duties, spend more time in the laboratory and concentrate fully on research.
