Patient day on radiotherapy for prostate cancer
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University Medical Center Freiburg will inform visitors about radiation treatment for prostate cancer on November 9, 2019. There will also be insights into research activities and a tour of the latest treatment
Modern radiotherapy is an important pillar in the treatment of prostate cancer. The patient can be cured with radiotherapy both in the case of a newly diagnosed tumor and in the case of recurring cancer after surgery. If the tumor has already spread into the tissue and formed so-called metastases, radiotherapy can significantly prolong survival and gently alleviate possible symptoms. In order to present the latest treatment methods and advances in research, the Department of Radiology is organizing a
Patient Day Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer
on Saturday, November 9, 2019
between 11 am and 2 pm
at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Freiburg University Medical Center,
Robert-Koch-Straße 3 in Freiburg.
Admission is free, registration is not required.
In addition to lectures and the opportunity for personal discussions, interested parties will be given an insight into how radiotherapy works and how it is carried out. During guided tours of the clinic, visitors can view state-of-the-art radiation equipment in the bright and patient-friendly rooms of the Department of Radiation Oncology. In short lectures, experts will present the latest findings on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors - especially prostate cancer. However, the event is also of interest to patients with other types of cancer.
Treatment and technical equipment at the highest level
In order to be able to apply radiotherapy as precisely as possible, the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Freiburg University Medical Center has technical equipment of the highest international standard. This means that the position of the prostate can be localized with millimetre precision both before and during radiotherapy. This is the prerequisite for precise treatment and for the application of high radiation doses (as part of so-called stereotactic radiotherapy).
The use of modern diagnostic imaging techniques for personalized radiotherapy is a key research focus of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Freiburg University Medical Centre. Imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and PSMA-PET/CT are used not only to determine the exact position of the tumour, but also to characterize the biological properties of the tumour tissue.
In a recently published paper, a research group from the Department of Radiation Oncology was able to show for the first time that PSMA-PET images can be used to determine the Gleason score of prostate tumors and thus assess the stage of a cancer. This topic is being further researched in several international collaborative projects with renowned partners as part of the EU program - HORIZON 2020 under the leadership of the Department of Radiation Oncology in Freiburg. In order to be able to offer patients the latest research findings in clinical routine, the Department of Radiation Oncology cooperates closely with other facilities at the University Medical Center Freiburg, such as Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Urology, Pathology and Oncology.
"Radiotherapy has made enormous progress in recent years in terms of precision, safety and effectiveness. That's why no patient should be afraid of treatment, but should seize the opportunity," says Prof. Dr. Anca-L. Grosu, Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Freiburg University Medical Center.
At the patient day, after a brief introduction to radiotherapy by Prof. Grosu, clinic experts will explain treatment methods for prostate cancer in ten-minute presentations:
