Award for rheumatology research in Freiburg
Prof. Dr. Marta Rizzi (2nd from left), Prof. Dr. Jens Thiel (2nd from right) and Prof. Dr. Nils Venhoff (3rd from left) from the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Uniklinik have been awarded the John Grube Research Promotion Prize 2025. They received the 20,000 euro prize for their study on granulomatosis with polyangiitis - a rare autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own blood vessels. First Clinical Prize 2025 of the German Society of Urology
Prof. Dr. Dr. Arkadiusz Miernik (Managing Senior Physician at the Department - University of Freiburg Urology and Head of the Section for Urotechnology) and his project team received the First Clinical Prize for the best clinical work at this year's German Urology Congress (DGU) in Hamburg. The prize was awarded to the VISIMON project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which researched and developed a digital system for the intelligent monitoring of bladder irrigation in patients following transurethral surgery. The prize is endowed with 2,500 euros.

Prof. Passlick honored with the Vogt-Moykopf Medal
At the 33rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic Surgery (DGT) in Bregenz in mid-September, Prof. Dr. Bernward Passlick, Medical Director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, received the Vogt-Moykopf Medal, which was awarded for the first time. The award recognizes his outstanding clinical and scientific achievements, particularly in the surgical treatment of lung cancer. According to the laudatory speech, Passlick has shaped an entire generation of thoracic surgeons at the Uniklinik over two decades and promoted the spread of gentle surgical methods.

Poster prize for gynecologist
Dr. Alexandra Geffroy, Senior Physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center of Freiburg, won the poster prize at this year's Congress of the German Society of Senology in Stuttgart at the end of June for her paper "Senological surgery for gender incongruence: retrospective analysis of a transgender collective". This is a scientific study of breast operations on people whose gender identity does not match their sex assigned at birth. The prize is endowed with 300 euros.

High honor for Freiburg epilepsy experts
Prof. Dr. Andreas Schulze-Bonhage, Head of the Epilepsy Center of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, was honored as an "Ambassador for Epilepsy" at the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) meeting in Lisbon at the end of August. Excellent habilitation
The Sabine-von-Kleist Habilitation Prize 2024 was presented to PD Dr. Elisabeth Schorb from the Department of Medicine - University of Freiburg by the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Daiana Stolz, at the EIRA Alumnae Network Meeting of the Faculty of Medicine in mid-July. By developing innovative study concepts, Schorb was able to significantly improve the treatment of patients with CNS lymphomas, especially for older patients. The Faculty of Medicine's Sabine von Kleist Habilitation Prize is awarded annually and is endowed with 5,000 euros.

Freiburg radiotherapist receives honorary doctorate
In July, Prof. Dr. Anca-Ligia Grosu, FACR, Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, received the "Doctor honoris causa" award from the Bucharest University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila - one of the oldest and most prestigious academic institutions in Romania - for special scientific achievements in the field of radiation oncology.

Olkin Address for Dr. Guido Schwarzer
Dr. Guido Schwarzer, statistician at the Institute of Medical Biometry and Statistics at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, was awarded the "Olkin Address" at the annual meeting of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology (SRSM) in Madison, USA in July. The society's highest honor recognizes his international contribution to the methodology of evidence synthesis, particularly in the field of network meta-analysis, where he has been doing pioneering work for many years.

Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon awarded
Prof. em. Dr. Friedhelm Beyersdorf, long-time Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany on Monday, July 7. The award recognizes his decades of service to cardiac surgery, including the first heart transplant in Freiburg and the introduction of innovative cardiac support systems. The award was presented by Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Justice, Marion Gentges MdL, at a ceremony at the University of Freiburg.

Prof. Grosu is President-elect of DEGRO
Prof. Dr. Anca-L. Grosu (FACR), Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, was elected President-elect of the German Society of Radiation Oncology (DEGRO). The election took place at the end of June at the DEGRO Congress in Dresden. A president-elect is the first deputy and elected successor to the presidency. The presidency passes to Grosu after two years. The specialist society promotes research, innovation and advanced training in radiotherapy - with a particular focus on interdisciplinary cooperation.
