No place for violence against women
Since Monday, March 17, a red bench at the University Medical Center Freiburg has been setting an example against gender-based violence

Since Monday, March 17, 2025, a red bench has stood in front of the Department of Gynecology at the University Medical Center Freiburg. It is intended as a symbol to draw attention to violence against women. The red bench was set up by the Freiburg Office for Intervention against Domestic Violence and is touring Freiburg and the surrounding area. For six weeks, it will now also be on display at various locations at the hospital.
"The red bench is a powerful symbol. It invites us to pause, have conversations and stand up together as a society against violence against women. As the University Medical Center, we take responsibility for the protection and support of those affected," says Prof. Dr. Ulrike Schmidt, Head of the Examination Office for Victims of Violence at the University Medical Center Freiburg.
The University Medical Center Freiburg has long been involved in various projects and institutions dealing with the prevention of violence and support for women.
Examination Center for Victims of Violence (USG): This facility at the Institute of Forensic Medicine offers all persons who have been victims of physical violence the possibility of forensic documentation without having to involve the police or other authorities beforehand. Securing and documenting the consequences of physical injuries can help those affected to decide on the right course of action for them and to make a decision for or against pressing charges without time pressure. The service is free of charge for those affected and is subject to medical confidentiality.
Freiburg Center for Women with Genital Mutilation (FZG): Female genital mutilation has serious consequences, especially during pregnancy and childbirth. At the center, culturally sensitive doctors advise and treat affected women and provide medical care. The FZG also provides medical care in the event of health complaints and complications.
Sexualized harassment in the workplace: The University Medical Center Freiburg has set itself the goal of creating a safe and respectful working environment. It takes a clear stance against sexualized harassment and stalking and consistently holds perpetrators accountable. An action plan shows employees what support is available and provides them with contact persons. As part of the "Clear stance against sexualized harassment" campaign, the university hospitals in Baden-Württemberg sent a clear signal against sexualized harassment in January 2025 with eye-catching campaigns.
