Study at Freiburg University Medical Center investigates whether overheating baths can alleviate depressive symptoms / Participants aged between 18 and 70 wanted

Can targeted body warming alleviate depressive symptoms? A new clinical study by the University Center for Naturopathy at the Department of Internal Medicine II at the Freiburg University Medical Center is investigating this question. Scientists are testing the use of so-called overheating baths as a complementary, non-drug treatment option. They are applied in water heated to around 40 degrees under medical supervision. The aim is to use thermal stimuli to influence the autonomic nervous system and thereby stabilize the patient's mental state.

"With this approach, we want to offer patients with depression gentle, complementary support - in addition to conventional drug therapy," says Prof. Dr. Roman Huber, Head of the University Center for Naturopathy at the Freiburg University Medical Center.

Procedure and requirements for participation

Women and men between the ages of 18 and 70 who are currently suffering from a depressive episode or a recurring depressive disorder can take part. The four-month study phase begins with a detailed initial examination. This is followed by an eight-week treatment phase with several appointments per week and a follow-up. All examinations and treatments are free of charge and travel costs can be reimbursed on request.

The prerequisite for participation in the study is that the existing therapy has not been changed for at least four weeks prior to the start of the study. Serious physical or other mental illnesses exclude participation.
