25 years of the Freiburg stem cell database

Big anniversary celebration on May 10 in the Klinikpark of the University Medical Center Freiburg / Typing campaign, lectures and hands-on activities

For 25 years, the Freiburg Stem Cell Registry at the University Medical Center Freiburg has been making an important contribution to the treatment of patients with blood cancer. During this time, almost 700 people have received stem cell and bone marrow donations. Today, the registry has around 66,000 registered potential donors. The 25th anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a big party in the Klinikpark of the University Medical Center Freiburg. Visitors can expect a varied program consisting of lectures, testimonials from former patients and donors, hands-on activities and a typing campaign.

"A quarter of a century of the stem cell database - that means a quarter of a century of hope in the fight against blood cancer. Every single registration can save lives," says Dr. Julia Braun, Head of the Freiburg Stem Cell Registry.

"Stem cell transplantation is an integral part of clinical therapy for many forms of leukemia, lymphomas and certain immune diseases," says Prof. Dr. Justus Duyster, Medical Director of the Department of Internal Medicine I at the Freiburg University Medical Center. "Without suitable donors, these treatments would not be possible. The Freiburg Stem Cell Registry thus makes an indispensable contribution to modern cancer medicine."

The focus of the celebration day will be an extensive typing campaign with the aim of achieving a new record number of registrations. Anyone interested can easily register as a potential donor - all it takes is a cheek swab and a declaration of consent. In addition, the festival offers a varied program with testimonials from donors and patients, specialist presentations, a raffle and hands-on activities for children and adults. Various food trucks will provide refreshments. The detailed program can be found here.

Freiburg stem cell center

Since its foundation in 2000, the Freiburg Stem Cell Registry of the University Medical Center Freiburg has been committed to the fight against leukaemia and other diseases of the haematopoietic system. Its aim is to find a suitable stem cell donation for every sick person. Its main tasks are the recruitment and support of donors before, during and after the stem cell donation. Typing kits can be conveniently ordered for home delivery at any time at www.freiburger-stammzelldatei.de.

The work of the Freiburg Stem Cell Registry is made possible to a large extent by donations, as the costs of typing are not covered by the healthcare system. "Every donation, regardless of the amount, helps to continue offering free typing," emphasizes Braun.
