Nursing Director Helmut Schiffer retires - Stefanie Bieberstein becomes his successor

The Supervisory Board of the University Medical Center Freiburg has announced the successor to long-serving Director of Nursing Helmut Schiffer , who will retire at the end of 2025. His former deputy Stefanie Bieberstein will take over the role of Director of Nursing from December 1, 2025 and will therefore also become a member of the Executive Board of the University Medical Center Freiburg.

"We are delighted that Stefanie Bieberstein, a very high-profile nursing manager, is taking over as Director of Nursing. She has a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the challenges facing university medicine," says Dr. Carsten Dose, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. "Ms. Bieberstein knows the hospital, has excellent professional qualifications and has a clear idea of how nursing can remain strong in the future."

Stefanie Bieberstein has been Deputy Director of Nursing at the University Medical Center Freiburg since 2015. Prior to this, she worked for many years in management positions at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, including as nursing center manager for surgical and emergency medical areas. She began her professional career in 1985 with nursing training in Göttingen.

In her new role, Bieberstein intends to focus in particular on personnel development, promoting young talent and staff retention. "Motivated, qualified nursing staff are the key to good care and successful change," says Bieberstein. "It is important to me to create a framework in which employees can develop individually - with a management culture based on trust, responsibility and cooperation."

Helmut Schiffer has been Head of Nursing at the Freiburg University Medical Centre since 2013. Under his leadership, nursing has been strategically developed, strengthened and professionalized. Among other things, the hospital became a magnet hospital under his leadership as part of the Magnet4Europe study to promote staff retention and recruitment and further develop patient care. "Helmut Schiffer has had a decisive influence on nursing at the University Medical Center Freiburg and has set standards nationwide," said Dose. "We would like to thank him very much for his many years of commitment and foresight."
