Safe and secure: the midwife-led delivery room at Freiburg University Medical Center launches

Gynecology

(15.01.2025) From January 2025, the Clinic for Gynaecology will be offering natural obstetrics for women with low-risk pregnancies. Registrations are now open.

From January 2025, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Medical Center Freiburg will be offering birth in a midwife-led delivery room, which will provide expectant parents with a special setting for the birth of their child. This special service combines the safety of a clinical environment with the intimacy and care of continuous support from a midwife. The medical service remains available in the background and is only called in when necessary. The first births in the midwife-led delivery room are expected from March 2025. Registrations for a preliminary consultation are now possible online.

The interaction makes the offer so special

"We are thus expanding our range of obstetrics services and giving all those families who want to experience the birth of their child as naturally as possible with intensive midwife care," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Gynaecology at the Freiburg University Medical Centre. "At the same time, the safety of a highly specialized clinic is guaranteed at all times. This interaction is what makes our offer so special."

Natural and safe birth

The midwife-led birth is aimed at parents-to-be who have a low-risk pregnancy and wish to have a natural birth. A clearly defined risk catalog determines which pregnant women can use this service. Premature births, twin births or births following a caesarean section, for example, are excluded.

An experienced midwife accompanies the mother during the entire birth process in a one-to-one relationship and creates a trusting, intimate atmosphere. A delivery room in the Clinic for Gynaecology is being redesigned to create a safe and secure atmosphere. A second midwife is present during the birth of the child. Gynaecologists are only called in if there are complications. Strong painkillers are deliberately not used in order to promote the natural course of the birth. However, these are of course available at all times. If they are needed, the women giving birth will continue to be cared for as usual in collaboration with the medical team. This does not require a change of room or midwife.

Care right through to the puerperium

"This delivery room offers space for even more intensive midwifery work, which not only the women giving birth are looking forward to, but also us midwives," says Carolina Fink, midwife and project manager for the introduction of the midwife-led delivery room at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Freiburg University Medical Center.

The concept of the midwife-led delivery room even goes beyond the birth: the midwives continue to provide close support to the families after the birth. "From the ward round to the postnatal consultation, our team ensures that the birth and the postpartum period are intensively supported by midwives," says Fink.
