"Medical knowledge for children": Blood - a very special juice
Blood is both the body's police force and the most important transport medium in the human body - Dr. Markus Umhau will explain what this special juice can do on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at "Medical Knowledge for Children" at the Medical Center - Universi
Making difficult medical topics understandable for schoolchildren and getting them excited about this field are the goals of the "Medical Knowledge for Children" lecture series at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The next lecture in the series entitled "Blood - A Very Special Juice" will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 3 p.m. in the lecture hall of the University Women's Hospital (Hugstetter Straße 55, 79106 Freiburg).
Only one to two liters of blood flow through the body of a child - four to six liters through the body of an adult. We humans cannot live without enough blood, because blood transports all the important nutrients, hormones and enzymes to the body's cells. The various components of blood are responsible for this: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and blood plasma.
In addition to its transport function, blood also has another task: it fights viruses and bacteria that want to make us ill on a daily basis. Just like the real police, the white blood cells known as body police are constantly on the hunt for criminals in the body. Once they have tracked down a villain, they render these viruses or bacteria harmless. Not all blood is the same, but differs according to blood type.
Blood expert Dr. Markus Umhau explains in "Medizinwissen für Kinder" what blood can do, why it is tested, how blood groups are determined, why it can be donated and how it heals wounds. The physician heads the Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, where many people come to donate blood every day. These blood donations are vital for the treatment of seriously ill or seriously injured people.
During the lecture, the children will have the opportunity to put their questions directly to the expert.
Please note: Only children between the ages of 8 and 12 can take part. Children can come alone, but may also bring an accompanying adult.
There will be a small snack after the 45-minute lecture.
Admission is free. Registration is not required.
