In order to avoid packaging waste, the reusable coffee cup "Freiburg Cup" has been available in all catering establishments at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg since mid-February

Fragrant takeaway coffee from paper cups is a morning ritual for many. But this environmental impact has been a thing of the past at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg since mid-February: 1,400 "Freiburg Cups", reusable coffee cups made of sturdy plastic, have gradually been put into circulation at the ten cafeterias on the entire hospital campus. The deposit for the new coffee cups, which can also be returned to all participating cafés and bakeries in Freiburg, is one euro. With the introduction of the Freiburg Cups, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is following the idea of Freiburg Waste Management, which developed the cup in order to get the waste problem in Freiburg under control.

"The Freiburg Cup is the perfect gastronomic solution for the Medical Center - University of Freiburg to expand the 'Green Hospital' concept. As the largest employer on site, it must be our task to set a good and ecological example," says Joachim Tschocke, Head of Casino Operations at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. In future, patients, employees and visitors to the catering outlets at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will have the choice of drinking their coffee to go from a cardboard container or from the new environmentally friendly deposit cup, for which they pay a one euro deposit. Coffee drinkers who want to continue drinking from the paper cup will pay ten cents more for the disposable cup.

With the popularity of takeaway coffee, the amount of packaging waste is also constantly increasing. This is because disposable coffee cups end up in the bin after a short period of use, polluting the environment. This is why Freiburg's waste management department has joined forces with café operators in the region to develop the "Freiburg Cup", which makes takeaway coffee possible with little packaging waste. Only the lids are disposable and are put in the yellow bag after use. Once the coffee has been drunk, the cups can be returned to any participating café in Freiburg. The used cups are washed in the café where they were returned. And the "Freiburg Cups" are ready for the next coffee drinker. The city of Freiburg is bearing the costs of introducing the deposit system.
