Pupils run a station
In February 2019, healthcare and nursing students will take over the management of a ward at the University Medical Center Freiburg for one month / Ceremonial opening of the pilot project on February 4, 2019 at 10 a.m.
"Taking responsibility - creating new learning situations": Under this motto, fifteen healthcare and nursing students will be in charge of the Ecker surgical ward at the Freiburg University Medical Center for a month in February 2019. During this period, the prospective third-year nurses will independently take over the nursing care of patients and the organization of everyday life on the ward.
The pilot project will be officially opened with a reception for members of the press on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 10 a.m. on Ward Ecker in the Surgical Clinic, Hugstetter Str. 55, at the University Medical Center Freiburg.
"It is important to us to offer students of healthcare and nursing here at the hospital excellent and, above all, practice-oriented training in order to optimally prepare them for their upcoming career entry," says Stefanie Bieberstein, Deputy Director of Nursing at the University Medical Center Freiburg.
As part of the project, which was developed over a year by an interdisciplinary working group with participants from the clinic and academy, the nursing students care for inpatients independently and perform all the tasks of registered nurses - from ordering medication to documentation and rostering. They are supervised by qualified nurses, practice instructors and teaching staff from the Academy for Medical Professions at Freiburg University Medical Center. "We are delighted to be able to establish new forms of learning here at the hospital and thus keep our training program up to date," explains Franz-Josef Overhoff, Head of the Academy for Medical Professions at the University Medical Center Freiburg.
Robert Arnitz, Head of Nursing at the Department of Surgery and the Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine at the University Medical Center Freiburg, is also convinced by the project: "We want to inspire young people for the nursing profession in the long term - solid, practice-oriented training with good guidance is essential for this."
The project has also been well received by doctors. Prof. Dr. Björn Stark, Medical Director of the Clinic for Plastic and Hand Surgery, to which the Ecker ward belongs, emphasizes: "We are happy to make our ward available for the project. Good training for nurses and doctors is an important investment in order to secure top-quality care here at the hospital in the long term."
