Prostate cancer: For most patients, this diagnosis comes as a shock. If surgery is necessary, many also fear side effects such as potency problems or incontinence. But thanks to a state-of-the-art surgical robot, prostate cancer in Freiburg can now be operated on in a minimally invasive and particularly gentle way.
The most modern Da Vinci surgical robot of its kind has been in use at the Department of Urology at the Freiburg University Medical Center since the beginning of 2019. The first patients have already been successfully operated on. This makes the Department of Urology at the University Medical Center Freiburg the first clinic in Freiburg and the surrounding area to use this particularly gentle surgical method to treat prostate cancer.
"We are delighted to be able to offer this minimally invasive procedure in Freiburg. Not only does it reduce the risk of high blood loss during the operation, but experience has also shown that patients recover more quickly from the procedure," says Prof. Dr. Christian Gratzke, who has been Medical Director of the Department of Urology at the Freiburg University Medical Center since October 2018.
The Da Vinci surgical system has a controllable video system that provides high-resolution 3D images with up to tenfold magnification. It also consists of several finely movable arms: They enable surgeons to make particularly precise incisions that are almost impossible to perform with the human hand. The camera and operating arms are controlled by the surgeon on a specially developed console, which transfers the movements of the finger to the robotic arms.
