On Saturday, November 23, 2019, an information event on chronic inflammatory bowel diseases will take place at the University Medical Center Freiburg / Patients, relatives and other interested parties are invited to attend

Around 400,000 people in Germany suffer from a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Patients, relatives and interested parties can find out which therapies can help today and in the future on

Saturday, November 23, 2019
from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm
in the large lecture hall of the Medical Clinic
at the Freiburg University Medical Center,
Hugstetter Straße 55 in Freiburg.

Registration for the free event is not necessary.

How the gut and psyche interact

One lecture at the event will focus on the close interaction between the gut and the psyche. "We now know that depression is associated with an increased risk of chronic bowel disease. Conversely, bowel diseases are also a risk factor for mental illness," says PD Dr. Peter Hasselblatt, Senior Consultant at the Department of Internal Medicine II at the Freiburg University Medical Center and Head of the IBD Outpatient Clinic. The majority of IBD sufferers also suffer from persistent exhaustion, known as fatigue. "It is often relieving for those affected to understand that the symptoms are related. We can support them with a well-adapted therapy," explains the gastroenterologist.

New hope through new medication

Alongside surgery, drug therapy is still a central pillar of IBD treatment. With the recent approval of new drugs, the treatment spectrum has been significantly expanded. "For many patients, the previous drugs were not effective enough. The new drugs should be a real improvement here," says Hasselblatt. The new treatment options and those expected in the near future will be presented in a lecture. Other speakers will deal with surgical interventions and long-term complications of inflammatory bowel disease. Between the lectures, experts and representatives of the self-help group "Deutsche Morbus/Colitis ulcerosa Vereinigung" (DCCV e.V.) will be available for questions and discussions.
