"Rare are many": On the occasion of Rare Disease Day 2020, the Freiburg Center for Rare Diseases is presenting something new in cooperation with the Center for Pediatrics at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg on February 21 and 22

The Freiburg Center for Rare Diseases (FZSE), in cooperation with the Center for Pediatrics of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, invites you to a two-day information event on February 21 and 22, 2020in the large lecture hall of the Center for Pediatrics, Mathildenstr. 1, of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. In numerous lectures and discussion rounds, experts from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, self-help groups and politicians will discuss current challenges and exciting medical developments. At the same time, there will be plenty of opportunity to get to know each other personally. Admission is free, registration is not required.

The occasion is Rare Disease Day on February 29. It aims to draw attention to diseases that affect fewer than five in 10,000 people. Around four million people in Germany suffer from a rare disease, most of them children.

On Friday, February 21, 2020, the Center for Rare Diseases (FZSE) will introduce itself to interested physicians, private individuals and those affected. From 12 noon to 5.30 pm, the audience will learn background information on rare diseases from experts from the FZSE and its specialist centers and gain insights into various treatment options based on specific patient examples. The current and future situation and the importance of centers for rare diseases will be discussed in a panel discussion.

On Saturday, February 22, 2020from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the focus will be on rare diseases in children. Experts from the Center for Pediatrics and the pediatric centers of the FZSE at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will discuss why rare diseases require special medicine, how knowledge from basic research can be translated into clinical practice, and how those affected can be helped through rapid diagnosis and appropriate therapy, even in the case of potentially life-threatening diseases. The event will conclude with a panel discussion on the topic of "How much commitment are rare diseases worth to us?".
