Social distancing: blood donations now possible with an appointment

Appointments to donate blood can now be made online at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / This reduces the time required and the number of people on site / Blood donations are still permitted despite Freiburg's entry ban

Blood donations are still needed to ensure the supply of blood to patients at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The Blood Donation Center is now offering the option of making appointments to donate blood online. "In light of the current need for social distancing, it was important to us to ease the situation in the waiting room at the blood donation center. Due to the appointment donations, there will only be as many people in the rooms as necessary," explains Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of the Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Even with the current ban on entry, blood donations remain permitted as a vital measure for healthcare.

Make an appointment with just a few clicks

"With the new appointment donation service, we can also ensure that donors can register as quickly as possible and go through the blood donation process quickly," continues Umhau. This makes it easier for people with little time to donate blood. It only takes a few clicks and a minute to book an appointment online. A reminder email can be sent on request. New donors must first register by email and can use the appointment booking function once they have been activated.

Donating blood remains important

Even in the current state of social emergency, blood donations are vital, including for the treatment of people with cancer and after accidents and major operations. The blood donation center relies on the solidarity of the people in Freiburg and the region: "We hope that the appointment donation will be well received. It's a win-win-win solution for donors, employees and patients," says Umhau.

Admission control before donation

The blood donation center has introduced entry checks to minimize the risk of infection. The temperature is already measured in the entrance area. If the temperature is 37.5 degrees or higher, a one-week deferral applies. In the event of a cold or cough, there is also a one-week time limit. After stays in risk areas or contact with people with suspected or confirmed coronavirus, a four-week deferral applies. Any waiting times must largely be spent outdoors. With the help of the appointment donation and admission control, it can be ensured that only a few people are in the blood donation center at any one time.
