Covid-19 survivors can help
Call for plasma donations from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg
The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is calling on people who have been proven to be infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and have recovered to donate plasma. "Plasma from previously infected people can be an important therapeutic component for patients who are acutely ill with Covid-19," says Prof. Dr. Toni Cathomen, Director of the Institute of Transfusional Medicine and Genetherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. After an infection with SARS-CoV-2, the plasma contains antibodies against the novel coronavirus. If a Covid-19 patient receives plasma from a person who has already produced antibodies, there is strong evidence that the antibodies support the patient's immune system in fighting the virus.
In individual cases, the plasma collected by the blood donation center from people who have recovered from Covid-19 can be given directly into the blood of seriously ill patients in order to support the immune system of these seriously ill patients in fighting off the virus. Some of the donated plasma can also be passed on to plasma-processing companies, which use the donations to produce a pure antibody preparation for Covid-19 patients.
Covid-19 plasma donors must meet two requirements
Anyone wishing to help seriously ill Covid-19 patients with plasma donations must meet two requirements: The illness must have been cured for at least four weeks and there must be positive evidence of SARS-CoV-2. Anyone who meets these two criteria can contact us at blutspende@uniklinik-freiburg.de with the subject "Covidplasma", stating their first and last name, date of birth and a personal telephone number. The Blood Donation Center at the University Hospital will then contact interested parties to arrange appointments for the preliminary examination and plasma donation. Plasma donations can be made at weekly intervals for a period of around two to four months.
