Millions in funding for Freiburg Covid-19 research
A network led by the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will summarize and evaluate the latest findings on corona and make them available to medicine, politics and citizens as quickly as possible / 4.5 million euros in funding from the BMBF
In the current corona pandemic, political, medical and practical decisions on optimal prevention and treatment must be made in parallel and under time pressure. In order to create an even better basis for decision-making, the nationwide expert network CEO-Sys is now being set up under the leadership of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. This network will review the quality of new scientific findings on COVID-19 pandemic management as quickly as possible and make them available to users, decision-makers and citizens in a comprehensible form. The CEO-sys network of 21 universities and four non-university partners is receiving 4.5 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the National Research Network of University Medicine on Covid-19 (NUM). Around 1.6 million euros of this will go to Freiburg. In addition, researchers from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are involved in eight other NUM research networks.

This shows the importance of quality-centered, cutting-edge university medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "As a pioneer in terms of digitalization in the healthcare sector, we are now benefiting in many areas from our previous experience and established structures," Wenz continues.
An ecosystem for Covid research
The network "CEO-sys - Building a COVID-19 evidence ecosystem to improve knowledge management and translation" thus represents a new connecting element between science and all professionals, political decision-makers and citizens involved in medical care. CEO-sys is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Jörg Meerpohl, Director of the Institute for Evidence in Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "CEO-Sys aims to ensure consistently high quality medical care for the population across the board based on the latest scientific knowledge," says Meerpohl. "At the same time, research activities to tackle the pandemic will focus on the most urgent issues for the population." The topics that will be focused on include testing, outpatient and inpatient treatment as well as prevention, public health and mental health.
In addition, researchers at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are involved in NUM networks on emergency care, testing strategies and new detection methods, immunity and palliative care.
National research network of the University Medical Center on COVID-19
In order to bundle and strengthen activities to cope with the current pandemic, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the establishment of a research network of German university medicine on COVID-19 - "Network University Medicine" - initiated and coordinated by Charité with 150 million euros for one year. The program is designed to provide rapid and immediate support in order to provide optimal care for patients suffering from COVID-19. One focus is on clinical research and healthcare research, the results of which are intended to flow directly into and support healthcare and crisis management in line with the translational approach. The "University Medicine Network" promotes systematic and comprehensive exchange between the cooperation partners. Joint developments in research and patient care, an evidence-based approach and mutual learning should lead to a common approach to combating the pandemic.
