Medical physicist from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is elected President of the largest scientific society for medical physics in Europe

Prof. Dr. Dimos Baltas, Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, was elected President of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP) for the period 2021 to 2022 on September 15, 2020. At the same time, he was confirmed as a member of the Board from 2021 to 2024. The election of the new Board of Directors of the DGMP took place during this year's General Assembly, which was held as a digital webinar due to the coronavirus pandemic. Baltas' clinical focus is the development and establishment of new physical-technical methods in radiation oncology. Among other things, the department he heads deals with the analysis, improvement and development of new radiotherapeutic procedures. The focus here is on imaging and processing as well as radiation planning and measurement technology through to radiobiological assessment of the dose effect.

Medical Physics deals with the application of physical methods in medicine and biology. Due to its interdisciplinary orientation, it represents an important link in healthcare as well as in research and development.

The German Society for Medical Physics was founded in Stuttgart in 1969. Today, with over 1,700 members from research, development and clinical practice, it is the largest scientific society for medical physics in Europe. The non-profit association acts in particular as a crystallization point to initiate and shape the research, development and application of physical and technical methods in medicine and related fields.
