If there are symptoms of serious illnesses, it is essential to seek medical assistance

Since the coronavirus pandemic, more patients with advanced stages of the disease have been seen in outpatient clinics. "Many people with signs of a serious illness are afraid to go to hospital or their family doctor for fear of contracting the coronavirus," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Medical Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. "Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more cases where patients have waited too long to present their symptoms. In addition to acute emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes, this is also very problematic for symptoms of oncological diseases, for example, as diagnoses are increasingly being delayed."

Despite the current tightened visitor restrictions and the reduced elective program at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, care for emergencies and suspected serious illnesses is still possible without restriction. Urgent and non-postponable procedures and operations will also continue to take place. "If symptoms occur, patients should have them checked out by a doctor as soon as possible. This is the only way the physician can decide in good time whether treatment needs to begin immediately," says Prof. Fichtner-Feigl.

Patients without COVID-19 symptoms are examined and treated strictly separately from patients with suspected COVID-19. In this way, the risk of infection can be kept as low as possible.
