Oncological rehabilitation: a good time despite corona

The Clinic for Oncological Rehabilitation at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg offers people suffering from cancer safe and comprehensive rehabilitation despite coronavirus restrictions.

Many cancer patients are currently unsure whether or not they should start their rehabilitation due to the current coronavirus situation. Dr. Timm Dauelsberg, Medical Director of the Clinic for Oncological Rehabilitation at the Department of Tumor Biology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, advises against cancelling rehabilitation across the board or postponing it for a long time.

"Rehabilitation is very important after a cancer diagnosis in order to better cope with the subsequent disorders of cancer therapy and to regain strength," says Dauelsberg. He recommends that every cancer patient considers the possibility of rehabilitation in consultation with their physicians. His clinic also advises worried patients individually.

Patient safety has top priority

"We take our patients' fears and concerns about contracting coronavirus very seriously. We therefore carry out all our therapies with concepts adapted to the applicable hygiene regulations. We have agreed our rehabilitation services with the Institute for Infection Prevention and Hospital Hygiene at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. We thus guarantee a very high standard of protection against corona," explains the Medical Director. So even during the coronavirus pandemic, the time can be used to take care of your own health.

Rehab in times of corona: safer and more personal

In order to make the services even safer, the number of patients in sports and exercise therapy, autogenic training and group therapies in the Department of Psychooncology, for example, has been reduced and adapted to the requirements of the coronavirus regulations. Smaller groups also offer advantages: Physicians and therapists can focus even more intensively on individual patients.

The stay in the rehab clinic usually lasts three weeks. After arrival, all patients are tested for Sars-CoV-2 and FFP2 masks are mandatory in the clinic. Visits are not possible until further notice due to the legal regulations.
