The Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is grateful for the great solidarity shown by donors. Donating blood remains important even in times of pandemic

As everywhere else, special circumstances have prevailed at the Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg for the past year. It remains a challenge to ensure a smooth process and the most pleasant stay possible under the current conditions. And especially in times of corona, the blood donation center is dependent on loyal donors, but also new donors. "We are very grateful to our donors for supporting us even under difficult conditions," says Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of the Blood Donor Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Overall, the mood is confident and characterized by solidarity. "In a survey of our donors, we received overwhelmingly positive feedback for the past year."

Blood donations are urgently needed all year round, for example after serious accidents. Strict hygiene and distancing rules as well as admission controls are in place at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's blood donation center to ensure that donations can be made safely. After a slump in donations at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the numbers stabilized over the course of last year. "Despite coronavirus, we were able to count 29,000 whole blood donations. It's great that donors adapted so quickly to the new conditions and remained loyal to us," says Umhau. Every year, around 16,000 people from Freiburg and the region ensure that around 12,000 patients with cancer or undergoing major operations can be safely supplied with blood.

Donating blood safely possible

Blood can be donated at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg with or without an appointment. An identity card and, if possible, a vaccination certificate are required for every blood donation. Donors must be between 18 and 72 years old (first-time donors up to 64 years old). Men can donate blood every 8 weeks, women every 12 weeks.
