Organ donation at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg at a high level
With 15 organ donations last year, Freiburg takes a top position in a national comparison
Organ donation is a high priority in end-of-life intensive care treatment at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's intensive care units - even under the difficult conditions of the coronavirus pandemic. "Last year, we were able to grant 15 intensive care patients their wish for an organ donation after all curative treatment options had been exhausted and there was no longer any hope of survival," says Dr. Klaus Michael Lücking, Organ Donation Officer at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Of the 45 organs donated, 9 were transplanted in Freiburg. In a national comparison, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg thus once again takes a top position after the University Hospital Dresden, as the 2020 annual report of the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (DSO) published in mid-April shows.
The coronavirus pandemic led to a significant slump in organ donations in some European countries - in Germany, these were fortunately stable. Nevertheless, little has changed in the fundamental situation in organ donation and transplant medicine in Germany, as there is still a considerable gap between the number of organs donated and the number of patients on the waiting lists, particularly for heart and kidney organs.
